Asked for a favour he could not perform
It wasn't his day then to rise from his play pen
Already paid her, she gave him a form
And said if he did it, he'd come to no harm
Who can see very far in a light that blinded?
Better off getting it reflected in a spoon
Couldn't remember, the lights were too dim
The man with the long hand, it might have been him
Any pretender could take up the role
After a bender sends him back on the dole
Who can expect him to guess on a road that winded
What he was thinking as he passed along your wall
Too battered to gather an unanswered call?
Where did it leave him? High on a post
Didn't believe him after his utmost
Learning their own way, taking the blame
Then turning a blind eye, dishing it out again
Who can best lay it to rest but the absent minded
Every attack falling flat outside the hall?
Tricks got played on the way, made it hard to find it
Slowed the progression to a finely measured crawl
